Ahane GAA : Weekly Notes 31st July 2017

Senior Hurling : On Sunday evening, the Seniors played Kilmallock in County Championship. Playing with a strong breeze in the first half, Kilmallock were first to settle and looked like world beaters, knocking over some very good points. In true Ahane tradition, the players got themselves sorted out and began to claw themselves back into the game. The half ended with Kilmallock leading on a scoreline of 0:15 to 0:7. Fighting with real character and determination, Ahane had reduced the deficit to 4 points with 50 minutes gone. Kilmallock with a very experienced team and significant talent were able to hold out despite the best efforts of the Ahane fifteen. In this transition stage of the Ahane Senior team, it is good to see the very experienced Ollie Moran, John Meskell, David Laing and Niall Moran still battling away in the Ahane colours. There were some very competent and good hurlers in all lines on the field who have gained great experience this year. It is noteworthy that the squad now includes a number of Minors, Ciaran Barry and Dan Minihan (in his first match at this grade) had a really good outing.  Ahane’s next competitive match in the Championship is against South Liberties later in the month.  A date for the diary is Saturday evening of August 12th when Ahane play Faughs of Dublin in the final of the Tony Herbert tournament.

Limerick U21 Hurlers : Congratulations to Tom Morrissey who led the Limerick U21 team to a famous Munster Final victory last week over neighbours Cork on a scoreline of 0-16 to 1-11- a truly great achievement for Tom, his family and Ahane to captain his county to a victorious Munster final win.

Junior Hurling : The Junior hurlers played Caherline on Sunday - this was always going to be a difficult year for Junior Hurlers in Ahane, particularly when no less than six players from the Senior squad are playing their hurling in North America. The knock-on effect is that the Junior squad is reduced by six players. However, Ahane fielded a strong team against Caherline and competed well, were very competitive in the first half but fell away in the second half against a Caherline first team who took the spoils – nevertheless the players put up a very credible performance.

Minor Hurling : The minors had a tough away game to Kilmallock last week – the cooperation of parents in getting the team to Kilmallock at 6:30 on a working evening is greatly appreciated. With very many players unavailable due to holidays, injuries and work, Ahane had to make significant changes to the team. Despite that, Ahane had the better of the early exchanges and scored some very good points. An injury to County Minor, Dan Minihan, resulted in his move to the number 14 position. The lively Ronan Reale picked up a knock which saw him leave the field at half time. Ahane were very competitive throughout and there were some excellent performances. It was great to see Josh O Keefe and Chris O Sullivan settling in well and to see David Brennan and Paddy Quinn get their first start at minor level.  Well done to all the squad.

As Gaeilge : Comhghairdeas le Tom Morrissey a bhí ina chaptaen ar fhoireann faoi 21 Luimnigh nuair a bhuaigh said cluiche ceannais Craobh na Mumhan. Rachaidh said in aghaidh na Gaillimhe i gcluiche leathcheannais na hÉireann. Táim cinnte go raibh a chlann bródúil as a ndearna sé agus tá bród ar CLG Atháin freisin go bhfuil laoch mar Tom ina measc.  Theip ar fhoireann sinsir Atháin Dé Domhnaigh I bPáirc na nGael I gcraobh Luimnigh. Cill Mocheallóg 0-23 Atháin 1-14. Tá Atháin sa rás fós agus cluiche amháin fágtha sa ghrúpa. Caithfidh said an lámh in uachtar a fháil ar CLG Saor Theas sa chéad cluiche eile agus tá súil again go rachaidh na torthaí ó na cluichí eile ar son Atháin.

U12 :  the U12 footballers had a home league game against Coishlea Gaels on Thursday last.  The team were unlucky to come out on the wrong side of a 1-6 to 1-5 score-line after an excellent game of football between both teams.  The 16 players put in a credible team effort and indeed some of the scores and the team play was the best that has been seen from the players all season with some great build up and passing.  Well done and thanks to those who came back to Mackey Park from Cork, Clare and Kerry to play in the league game.   The Ahane U12 Hurlers travelled to the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday last to take part in a Munster Activity Day for U12 Players.  It was a great experience for the players who had 3 great games against 2 Clare teams (Clooney/Quin and Crusheen/Tubber) and Roscrea from Tipperary.  There was some great hurling from all sides taking part.  With many of the U12 squad away on holidays, the 11 players who took part on the day enjoyed a tour of the old and new dressing rooms after the games and had an opportunity to meet Gearoid Hegarty for the stadium tour.  Well done and thank you to all at Limerick GAA for arranging a super well organised day for the players.
