Ahane GAA : Weekly Notes 28th August 2017

Senior Hurling : Our Senior hurlers played the final SHC Round 5 tie against South Liberties on Sunday 27th August in Caherconlish.  To reach the quarter finals, Ahane needed to win and also to build up a big scoring difference, as Ballybrown had a superior scoring average going into the fixture.  Ahane came flying out of the blocks and played some excellent hurling as they raced into a 2-11 to 0-07 half time lead and it seemed as if maybe Ahane might just do the impossible.  However, South Liberties dug deep and despite Ahane totally dominating the match from start to finish and amassing a fine score of 2-20 to 1-12, it proved not to be enough and Ahane are now in the County Cup Competition as Ballybrown grabbed the last quarter final spot on scoring difference.  Huge credit to the whole Ahane panel and management as Ahane played some fabulous skillful hurling on the night and could not be faulted for effort, but just came up short on the score board.  Next up for Ahane Seniors is a trip up to Kilmacud Crokes for the annual 7's hurling competition which is on Saturday next 2nd Sept - we'd like to wish them all the very best of luck in this prestigious competition.

Junior Football : Our junior panel are continuing their training plans ahead of their final group match, away to Pallasgreen on Sunday September 3rd at 6pm.  The winner will advance to the East Junior A semi-finals with a clash against South Liberties.

Minor Hurling : Our Minor Hurlers final Premier Minor match against Adare is fixed for Tuesday 29th of August in Mackey Park with a throw in of 6.45pm.  We look forward to our Minors finishing the season on a high with a positive result against Adare and as ever all support on the evening will be very much appreciated.

As Gaeilge : Bhí bua maith ag Atháin ar Saor Theas tráthnóna Dé Domhnaigh I gCathair Chinn Lis. Scór: Atháin 2 – 20 Saor Theas 1 – 12.  Cé go raibh sár bhua acu ní raibh sé maith go leor chun dul ar aghaidh I gcraobh an chontae agus d’éirigh le Baile Brún an triú háit sa ghrúpa a ghearradh amach dóibh féin. Anois rachaidh Atháin isteach I gCorn an Chontae (County Cup) agus an chéad cluiche eile ná Atháin v An Cheapach Mhór.

U10 : Our U10 Footballers took part in the county blitz on Friday last in St. Patricks GAA Club.  The team played 3 games against Monaleen, Kildimo and Mungret.   The 8 players on the night put in a great effort to come out on top in all 3 games.

The U10 Hurlers welcomed Bruff to Mackey Park on Wednesday last. Bruff brought 2 teams and Ahane also fielded 2 teams ensuring two games. The displays by the young hurlers on both sides was very encouraging with very committed defending and some fine scores taken over the course of the two games. A big thank you to Shane G and James H for playing with Bruff on the night to ensure that the numbers of players on the teams were equal. Thank you to the supporters who turned out on both nights to roar on the young players.

U12 : The Ahane U12 Hurlers were away to Newcastlewest last Thursday in the 13-a-side league. On a splendid evening for hurling and played on a superb pitch, the Ahane players came away with a fine win.  There was very little between the teams in the first half with Ahane going in a goal up at the half time break. The players really turned on the style in the second half and with the backs restricting Newcastlewest to 1-1, the midfielders and forwards took great scores and ran out deserved winners on the night. There was a great effort put in by all 15 players and a performance to be proud of. The Newcastlewest manager in particular commented on the work-rate of the Ahane players which he thought was very impressive. A big thank you to the parents who make the long trip to Newcastlewest on a Thursday night (especially to Geraldine for making the trip from Kerry). It was a night to remember for the Carr family with a fine display by David at the GAA home of his dad and U12 Mentor Colum who hails from Newcastlewest!
