Ahane GAA : Weekly Notes 04th September 2017

Senior Hurling : Our Senior hurlers went to Dublin last Saturday 2nd September to take part in the prestigious Kilmacud Crokes 7s Hurling Tournament. Ahane were based in Bray Emmetts for the group stage and this was a 1st outing outside of Limerick for the team who were wearing our Munster Tree Surgeons sponsored jerseys.   1st up for Ahane was Shinrone from Offaly at 10am - a very tight and tentative game which Ahane won 3-10 to 5-03 for the all-important 1st win.  2nd match up was the highly fancied St. Brigids club from Dublin at 11am which was another tight affair although Ahane were defending with their lives at times, but still Ahane went on to win by 2 points on a scoreline of 4-05 to 2-09.  The 3rd & last opponent in the group stage was Padraig Pearse's from Galway at 12 noon, which Ahane dominated throughout and won the game comfortably 4-09 to 1-01.   So with 3 wins from 3, Ahane were straight into the quarterfinal stage at the Kilmacud main pitch against favorites Whitegate from Clare.  Ahane started the brighter and in a tight match, were 1-05 to 1-03 up leading up to halftime but suddenly Whitegate rattled in 2 breakaway goals inside a minute to lead 3-03 to 1-05 at the break.   Although Ahane rallied well in the 2nd half, it was Whitegate finished ahead 3-08 to 2-06.  Ahane equipped themselves very well overall in the Kilmacud 7s Tournament and were well up there with the best in Ireland as Whitegate finished the tournament as finalists and only narrowly lost the final to eventual champions Beagh from Galway. This was a great team bonding session as well as being a great experience for Ahane's young team which included: Adam O Brien, Jeffrey Enright, Ciarán Barry, Mark Foley, Dan Morrissey, Ciarán O Mara, John Meskell, Killian Enright, Colum Carroll and Pat Minehan.  Ahane will play Cappamore in the County Cup Semifinal at a date and venue which still has to be confirmed.

Minor Hurling : Our Minor Hurlers finished the season with a great display in Mackey Park as they overcame a very resilient Adare team on a scoreline of 2-25 to 1-07.  Team on the night included: Kevin Morrissey, Ishan Conroy, Padraig Harnett, Sean Feeney, Peter O Grady, Ciarán Barry (captain) Andrew Shanahan, Dan Minehan, Darragh Keogh, Ronan Fox, Conor Morrissey, William Brennan, Luke O Sullivan, Ronan Reale, Conor Heffernan, Jack Barry, Denis Hayes, Aidan Carroll, David Brennan and Paddy Hoen Quinn.  All in all it was a very satisfying performance and a nice way to finish the year.  Compliments must be paid to all the minor players who put in huge effort throughout the year - they will surely have big futures with the club.  The Ahane Minor Management of John Meskell, Colm Barry and Johnny Meskell would also like to extend our best wishes for the remainder of the season to the many young players from the U16 and U15 grades that were part of our playing squad

U8 : The Ahane U8 Hurlers were hosted by our near neighbours Clonlara GAA club last weekend in a very enjoyable series of 3 games.  The players enjoyed the games, in excellent conditions, on a crisp clear morning and played some lovely hurling, with good scores and good teamwork in evidence. The mentors were delighted to see the development of the player’s skills, as they kept the ball moving very well and their commitment and work rate was great to see as they all put in a great effort for the 3 games.  With schools and other activities starting back the mentors really appreciate everyone’s continued participation in and support for Ahane underage GAA.

U12 : The Ahane U12 Football team took part in the Football Finals day in Rathkeale on Saturday last. After a great season in the regular league, we had 16 players in Neville Park to take part in the end of season blitz. The team had 2 games against Croom and Ballybrown and put in a huge effort over the course of the 2 games. Led by Captain today Kyle Furlong (and Mayo fan!!) the team thoroughly enjoyed the day and played some great football over the course of the 2 games. Well done to a very special U12 squad and group and to the players who took part today - David, Darragh, James D, John, Kyle, Adam, Will, Stephen, Jack, James O'M, Cathal, Jamie, Ciaran, Devon, Sean and Ryan. A big thank you to all the U12 footballers from all the U12 Mentors on your commitment and enthusiasm over the course of the season.

Ryan Cusack Memorial : The U13 Hurlers took part in the Murroe Boher GAA Club - Ryan Cusack Memorial Tournament in Boher on Saturday afternoon.  With 4 teams taking part, there were some great games of hurling against Durlas Og, Murroe/Boher and Newport.  The U13 squad was made up of U13, U12 and U11 players who gained valuable experience over the course of 3 competitive and very supporting games of hurling. It was a great day and all the players thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.  After the games, all players, mentors, referees and fans were treated to a range of refreshments by the fantastic Murroe-Boher support group. The Murroe-Boher players won the tournament on the day and the Cup was presented by Ryan’s family in his memory after a special day in Boher. A big thank you from all in Ahane GAA Club to the Ryan family, Ollie and all at Murroe-Boher for your warm hospitality and invitation to a hugely successful and well run hurling tournament.

Condolences : We would like to extend our condolences to Sean Og, Orla and Fiona Herbert on the passing of Marie Herbert. Our thoughts are with you and relatives at this sad time.  Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.
