LIMERICK HURLING LEGEND MICK MACKEY PASSED AWAY 35 YEARS AGO YESTERDAY.
With Limerick’s under 21 All-Ireland win, treaty county natives are starting to dream of what this young group of talented hurlers might be capable of achieving a few years down the line.

1973 is a distant memory now, but a memory none the less for those who witnessed it. Our 21’s brought about excitement in the county this September, the feeling of pride in having a winning team in your corner is hugely satisfying.

This very date in 1982 one of the greatest hurlers to ever don the green jersey of Limerick passed away but because of his wonderful achievements the great Mick Mackey will forever be remembered.

Castleconnell’s Mackey was just 17 when he arrived on the inter-county scene, linking up with the Limerick minors.

The Ahane clubman made his senior debut in 1930 in the National League. Mackey was an instrumental figure for Limerick during the counties’ golden age.

The centre-forward won three All-Ireland medals, five Munster medals and five National Hurling League medals.

Mackey was a true hurling great, and will forever be mentioned in the same breath as the legends of the game, such as Cork’s Christy Ring.
