Ahane GAA : Weekly Notes 18th September 2017

Senior Hurling : Our Senior hurlers Ahane's Senior Hurlers returned to competitive action at the weekend as they took on Cappamore in the Senior County Cup Semifinal in Caherconlish on Sunday at 12 noon.  With tough conditions underfoot, this was never going to be a classic but nonetheless Ahane started brightly and dominated the 1st half, leading by 11pts to 1 at one stage, however Ahane allowed Cappamore back into it with some silly frees to bring it back to 12pts to 7 before Ahane finished the half strongly with a close range goal from Ciaran O'Mara to leave it 1-13 to 0-07 at half time.  Ahane seemed to switch off completely in the 2nd half, as Cappamore battled back, scoring a goal along the way to bring it back to a 2pt game at 1-17 to 1-15 with Ahane looking very nervy before Ciarán O Mara finished with a fine point, giving him 1-05 from play overall and giving Ahane a narrow 3pt win in the end on a final scoreline of 1-18 to 1-15. Ahane just about deserved the win in the end but they made it very hard for themselves with Cappamore scoring 10pts from some very softly conceded frees.  This takes Ahane into the County Cup Final against South Liberties which is fixed for the 30th September in the Gaelic Grounds.

New Additional Facilities / Dressing Rooms Project  :  The construction of our 2 new dressing rooms project is progressing well. The new dressing rooms will add much needed facilities to our clubhouse. More about our new project can be found at www.ahanegaa.ie/about under the heading of "Loan share scheme".

Junior Football : Our Junior Football team will play in the County Junior A Football Championship Quarter Finals v  Fr Caseys on 30th September in M Mick Neville Park at 4pm.

As Gaeilge : Bhí foireann sinsir Atháin ag imirt i gCorn an Chontae Dé Domhnaigh seo caite i gCathair Chinn Lis. Atháin 1-18  An Cheapach Mhór 1-15.  Cluiche ait a bhí ann toisc go raibh Atháin ag imirt thar barr ar feadh daichead nóiméad agus bhí an lámh in uachtar acu gan aon agó. Faoi seo bhí siad dhá chúilín déag chun tosaigh agus bhí cuma air go raibh an cluiche thart. Ach dhúisigh  An Cheapach Mhór agus tháinig said isteach sa chluiche de réir a chéile agus i ndeireadh na dála bhí an tádh le Atháin go raibh an bua acu mar bhí  brú orthu ag an fheadóg deireanach. Tá Atháin sa chluiche ceannais de Chorn an Chontae anois. Bhuaigh Saor Theas ar Mhóin a Lín sa chluiche leathcheannais eile.  Theip ar pheileadóirí Atháin sa chluiche ceannais den Roinn Thoir Dé Sathairn. Bhí Cill Tíle/Drom Caoin I bhfad ró láidir dóibh ar an lá.

Limerick U21 Hurlers :  Ahane are holding a homecoming celebration for Ahane's U21 hurling All Ireland winning Captain Tom Morrissey as he officially brings back the cup to his home club on Friday next 22nd September at 7.30pm in the Ahane Clubhouse.  It promises to be a huge night for the club as Ahane celebrate the homecoming of the 1st Captain from Ahane to bring home an All Ireland trophy since Mick Mackey did all those years ago.  Tom will be joined by fellow players and U21 management on the night along with invited guests and the event promises to be a very memorable occasion as all the underage players and parents from all 3 schools in the area will also be in attendance.  Tom also plans to visit the 3 National schools, Ahane, Lisnagry and Castleconnell with the U21 All Ireland trophy on Thursday next 21st of September which promises to be a great occasion for all the National School children.

U8 / U10 : The U8 and U10 groups held a hugely entertaining hurling blitz in Mackey Park on Saturday last where visiting teams from Newtownshandrum, Doon, Kilmallock and Newport joined the Ahane teams in a festival of hurling. There was plenty of skill and commitment shown by the young U8 and U10 players with some fine scores and fast and open hurling. A big thank you to all the parents and everyone that helped to ensure a super day for the young players - to those that provided a fantastic array of food, those that helped with tea/coffee and drinks, traffic stewards, referees and to everyone that supported and assisted. There was such generous support from everyone that we were able to provide an array of food to McGarry House after the game which was very much appreciated.

U12 : The U12 hurlers wrapped up the seasons hurling series of games on Friday last with a trip to Knocklong to take part in two very competitive games of hurling in the U12 Finals day. We had 15 players on the night taking part in two great games against Caherline and Monaleen. Both games were very sporting and there were plenty of fine scores, skill and entertainment for the many supporters who turned on the night to roar on the U12 team. There was nothing between any of the teams with the boys losing to Caherline after a great tussle in the first game and coming out on top over our near neighbours Monaleen in the second game. Well done to Ciaran, Sean, Stephen, Jamie, James O'M, Cathal, Kyle, Darragh, David, James D, Will, Tony, Ben, James R and Jack. A big thank you and well done to all at Limerick GAA for a very well run evening in Knocklong and 2 great games for the Ahane players which were played under lights which added greatly to the occasion for the players.

U13 : The U13 Hurlers had their first league games of the season when Bruff were the visitors to Mackey Park on Wednesday last with Ahane travelling to Banogue on Monday evening.  The U13 team is supported by the U12 and U11 squad to field a team in the league and it is always going to be a big challenge against physically stronger sides but the players are benefiting from some competitive hurling games.  The U13 hurling league will continue throughout September on Monday and Wednesday evenings with the final hurling league game scheduled for Wednesday 04th October. The U13 Football league will commence on Monday 09th October and will continue throughout October with the final game scheduled for Monday 30th October.
