Tony Herbert was the last surviving member of Limerick's All-Ireland Hurling winning team of 1940. He was born in 1920 in Annacotty, Co Limerick, on the banks of the Mulcair River, the eldest of six children.

As a young boy he attended Limerick CBS whom he captained to win a Dean Ryan Cup. He also had the unique distinction of playing on three Munster Colleges Hurling teams during his CBS years.

A very youthful Tony played alongside other hurling notables – such as the Mackey brothers Mick and John, Jackie Power and Peadar Clohessy –in the 1940 final.

Tony played all his early hurling with the famed Ahane club and by his 22nd birthday he had won nine senior championships – five hurling and four football – plus an Oireachtas Hurling and Munster Senior medal in addition to his All-Ireland Hurling medal.

Tony moved to Dublin in 1943 and continued his passion for hurling by joining Faughs Hurling Club, with whom he won three Dublin Senior Hurling Titles.

Tony also represented Dublin in two All-Ireland Hurling finals in 1948 and 1952, unfortunately on the losing side on both occasions. He featured on the Leinster hurling team on four occasions, and in two of their clashes with Munster he faced his brother Sean.

Tony took a massive interest in under-age hurling, especially in the Crumlin area, coaching Dublin to win the 1954 Minor All-Ireland Hurling Final against Tipperary.
