AHANE V FAUGHS 31/03/2018

Last Saturday our Senior Hurlers took on Faughs in the Tony Herbert Memorial Cup in Mackey Park to honour the memory of the great Tony Herbert.
Tony Herbert, who was the last surviving member of the 1940 All Ireland winning Limerick hurling team when he passed away in 2014 won every accolade in GAA circles - he had 9 County titles with Ahane by the age of 22, 5 Hurling and 4 Football, an Oireachtas Hurling and Munster Senior medal in addition to his All-Ireland Hurling medal, won 3 Dublin County titles with Faughs, represented Dublin in 2 All Ireland finals with Dublin, played for Leinster Hurling team on four occasions, and in two of their clashes with Munster he faced his brother Sean.
So it was quiet fitting that Ahane should play Faughs last Saturday to honour this great Gael.

The Senior Hurling Match turned out to be a tough encounter with no quarter giving by either team. Faughs were out of the blocks much quicker and put up a lead of 4pts to 1 early on with some fine open and quick hurling, however Ahane rallied and by half time Ahane led by 11pts to 9.
The 2nd half saw Ahane work their way into the game and despite some injuries managed to score 2-4 to Faughs 7pts to finish the match worthy winners on a scoreline of 2-15 to 16pts.

Superb food was supplied in the clubhouse by Blaithín Herbert afterwards where the Herbert family from both Ahane and Faughs reminisced on the great Tony Herbert, Tony’s son Paddy thanked Ahane and Faughs for the entertaining match and invited Ahane back up to Faughs next year for a return match. Presentation of the the Tony Herbert Cup was made to Ahane’s Paul O Halloran by Faughs manager Joe Cunningham to rapturous applause.

Ahane’s Chairman Colm Barry also made a special presentation to Faughs of a portrait of of some special memorabilia of the village of Castleconnell in days gone by in memory of Tony Herbert.
