Ahane welcomed Newcastle West to Mackey Park on Wednesday evening for both sides second game in the O’Sullivan’s Fabrications Senior Camogie County Championship. Both teams came into the game on the back of winning their first round matches. It was a tough, hard physical battle from the minute the ball was thrown in, the game was level on a number of occasions.
Ahane started off the scoring with a point from Niamh, but testament to the kind of game it was the next score didn’t come for another seven minutes as both sets of players made life very difficult for each other. Niamh got the next score but it was closely followed by a point from Newcastle West’s full forward Katy Hurley. There was ferocious battling going on in the Ahane back line with all six backs playing a fantastic game, anchored by a solid performance from Audrey in between the posts. As the referee blew for half time the scores were four points a piece.
The second half got underway and the intensity of the first half was carried over into the second 30 minutes. Niamh got Ahane’s first score of the half then Newcastle West went ahead for the first time in the game. There was never more than a point or two between the teams until Newcastle West got their only goal of the game in the 13th minute and went 4 points up. Ahane battled hard an continued to plug away at the score. Ahane got their goal from a dropping free from Niamh in the 19th minute and they had the chance of two more goals at the end of the half but both were cleared by the Newcastle West backs. The game ended on the scoreline of Ahane 1-09 Newcastle West 1-11. A tough, close game that will stand to both sides as they head into their respective semi finals.
Ahane now travel to Killeedy on Sunday morning at 11:30 for their County Semi Final. We will have live updates on Twitter as there are no spectators allowed into the game.
