Ahane opened their account in the 2017 Premier Minor Hurling Championship with a hard fought 1 point win over Patrickswell out in Patrickswell in an end to end thriller of a match.
Aided by a strong wind in the 1st half Ahane started off the stronger team but there was only 1 point in it midway through the half when Dara Cullimore got the 1st of his 3 goal tally on the night to put Ahane 4 points up. Ahane continued to dominate and when Cullimore crashed the ball to the net just before half time, it left Ahane 2-08 to 0-09 ahead.
Playing against the wind in the 2nd half, Ahane had to dig deep to contain the expected onslaught from the "WELL" but to a man they all stood firm with tremendous work rate and slowly got on top again, aided by Cullimore's 3rd goal, some heroic defensive displays and a hard working midfield duo of Dan Minehan and Dion Lynch.
With 10 minutes left, Ahane looked in control, but then Patrickswell scored a quick goal and a point which brought it back to a 3 point game. However a monster of a long range free by Ciarán Barry followed by a cracker of a goal by William Brennan put Ahane well back on top, with Ronan Reale cooly slotting over a total of 7 points from placed balls, but Patrickswell robbed another late goal to leave the management team of John Meskell, Johnny Meskell and Colm Barry biting their nails for the final few minutes to win out by the slenderest of margins and record Ahane's 1st ever win away to Patrickswell for this group of players.
There were many heroes on the night but it was really a huge team effort that won it as every player gave their all and covered for each other all over the field.
Much thanks must go to the Ahane support on the night who weren't found wanting when their voices were needed to be heard as the last few minutes passed by and the Patrickswell supporters were urging their players on.
