Our U14 hurlers notched up a second victory in U14 Hurling league in a thrilling encounter with Kilpeacon (Crecora and Mainister) in Mackey Park this week. The game started on a sad but very respectful note with both young squads standing together in the center of the pitch for a minutes silence as a mark of respect to the late James(Jim) Hayes long serving Crecora GAA President who passed away earlier in the week, ar dheis Dé, go a n-ainm dílis. Kilpeacon captain Sam O’Riordan then shook hands with the Ahane captain Liam O’Mara and the game sparked into life. Donnacha O’Leary in goals along with the full-back line of Kyle Furlong, Colm Slattery-Wright and Stephen Hassett held up well under sustained early pressure. Evan O’Leary looked back to his old self at centre back and was ably supported by John Donoghue and Cormac Greaney, the latter showing particularly well with some dogged defending in the second half. The score at half time showed Ahane leading by 5 points on a scoreline of 2-4 to 1-2. Young Darragh Humphries showing well to claim 2 goals in that 1st half and Gavin Cole adding his 2 point contribution from frees before being forced to retire with a finger injury with the young Sean O’Neill slotting in to replace Gavin and doing very well on his 1st outing with the U14 squad. Half-time was a welcome break and when play resumed the hardworking Ahane mid-field pairing of Eddie Hartigan and Shane O’Grady worked tirelessly to feed the forward line with much needed quality possession. Liam O’Mara added some lovely points in that 2nd half and the tenacious David Carr, a forward with great potential gave an exhibition of defensive hooking and blocking when it was needed most. The inside line of Will McCormack and Sean O’Neill made sure every ball was used and the ever improving Ciaran Coulter slotted one of those breaking balls to back of the Kilpeacon net on the volley to secure a well-deserved win for Ahane on a final score line of 3-8 to 2-4.
