Ahane Senior Hurlers
We played South Liberties in the 4th Round of the group stages on Sunday last in Cappamore. With both sides going into the game with two wins and a single loss, the result would go a long was to deciding how the top of the group finished up. South Liberties played with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and while Willie Shanahan opened the scoring for Ahane with a fine point, Souths finished the half the stronger, knocking over 5 scores in succession in the latter stages to go in 11 points to 6 at the break. Ahane’s main scoring threat was Tom Morrissey who knocked over some fine frees in difficult conditions.
The second half started with a productive spell of play from Ahane, who quickly narrowed to lead to a point with fine scores from Tom, Mike Carr and veteran Niall Moran. A Tom Morrissey free with 5 minutes to go in normal time edged Ahane ahead for the first time on the day, 0-14 to 0-13. Just when things were looking bright, South Liberties struck with an equalising point which was soon followed by a well worked goal, having carved open the Ahane defence.
A couple of more points were traded before the Referree called time, with the final score Ahane 0-15 South Liberties 1-15. Hard luck to the lads who fought hard throughout.
Next up is a must win encounter with near neighbours Monaleen in the last round of the group stages - fixed for Sunday 23rd at 1pm in Cappamore.
