Ahane GAA's Liam McCarthy Homecoming
While the 19th of August will forever be fondly remembered by all Limerick folk as the day Limerick finally ended the long wait for an All-Ireland senior title, the 30th of September certainly added to the memories of those within the parish and club of Ahane GAA when the Liam McCarthy cup along with the victorious players returned to the parish for the homecoming. Special pride of place was due to having two or our own club members, brothers Tom and Dan Morrissey among the all-conquering 2018 side. And what a day it was!
Beginning with a visit to the nursing home in Castleconnell, the lads were greeted with songs, handshakes and hugs by all and some lovely pleasantries were passed given the joy it brought. They showed great support throughout the year and the lads were delighted to make this the first official stop in the parish.
A visit to the late Shane Lee’s memorial bench at Daly’s Cross followed, and this proved a very fitting tribute. Shane, one of Ahane and Limericks greatest fans will no doubt have been smiling down on seeing the pride of his family and friends hold the Liam McCarthy aloft at his homestead after all the years. Shane, who indeed had built up a relationship with the great JP McManus during his time of illness, will no doubt have enjoyed the banter of the day and being in the spotlight again!
As was tradition years ago, a successful Limerick side would have first stopped off at Castleconnell train station with the Liam McCarthy cup as it arrived back to Limerick. Although the route has changed a little now, both Tom and Dan commemorated this with a visit and some lovely snaps at the picturesque station.
From here, the lads with Liam Mc held high, embarked on a tour around village of Castleconnell within a spectacular cavalcade of grunting motorbikes from the Buachaill Dana MCC, led by Donal Walsh. A huge crowd turned out in the village which was awash with green and white to welcome them home. A stop at the statue of Limericks GAAs most famous son, Mick Mackey, allowed the lads get a picture with one of the greats – and who knows, they may have their own someday if they can add a few more Celtic crosses In time– no pressure! The lads got a lovely picture with Greg Mackey, son of Mick, which will be surely one to treasure.
All the time the crowd were gathering in Mackey Park, Newgarden where the main homecoming event was to take place. Brian O’Mara (MC) was warming up the crowd in his usual fun manner as they waited in anticipation for the arrival of their heroes. DJ Jimmy spun the tunes as the atmosphere rose and some other recent Ahane members achievements were outlined, including Siofra Keane who recently was part of the Limerick Ladies Junior Football squad which won an All-Ireland also, and she proudly hoisted the cup on stage.
The excitement hit the roof as Brian announced the lads were on the way. They were duly led through the crowd onto the field and to the stage by the motor cavalcade, as Tom and Dan held Liam McCarthy aloft to the rapturous cheering of the huge numbers in attendance. Flanked by All-Ireland winning teammates, Seamus Hickey, Shane Dowling, Barry Nash, Lorcan Lyons and Doon trio of Richie English, Pat Ryan and Darragh O’Donovan. On stage, MC Johnny Meskell welcomed all in attendance for making the occasion so special for the lads and the club. On stage, the Liam McCarthy cup oversaw all the players being introduced and interviewed, and lads gave some very interesting insights and observations to the questions and comments put to them! Last to speak were Tom and Dan who delighted the home crowd with their kind words. Club chairman Colm Barry presented Tom and Dan with framed photographs commemorating the year On behalf of the club.
The lads then moved to the clubhouse where they spent a huge amount of time signing autographs and having photos taken with all those in attendance. Huge credit must go to not only those who queued patiently, but to the players who were so generous with their time throughout the evening. They really are a credit to all associated with them and super role-models.
It was great to see representatives of the County board, John Cregan, and Liam Burke make the visit to our famous club, as well as friends and families from surrounding communities and clubs. A special mention was given to those involved in a recent bus crash in the parish and all involved were given photo opportunities with the lads and the cup as soon as they left the stage.
All the while, great live music continued from the stage while everyone enjoyed the multitude of food, refreshments and joyous atmosphere the club offered on what was a magical day, late into the evening.
Well done to all those who attended and a huge thanks to all the Limerick players, club members, committee and all associated who helped make this such a wonderful occasion.
Role on 2019!
