Our u21 hurlerss were pitted against a strong Na Piarsaigh side in the 3rd round of the Premier U21 Hurling Championship in Rhebogue last Tuesday evening. Ahane got off to another poor start and were 1-3 to 0-0 down after 7 minutes. After some remedial repairs, Ahane started to get a foothold in the game and proved to be more than a match for their illustrious city opponents for the remainder of the half.
A series of well worked points from Andrew Shanahan, Mark Donellan, William Brennan and Ronan Rox, as well as some pointed frees from the unerring Adam Murrihy, meant that Ahane trailed at half time 1-10 to 0-7.
Ahane dominated the early second half exchanges and registered 2 quick points after the resumption of play, including a great effort from half time sub Peter Donohue. Play was very even until Na Piarsaigh scored a decisive goal after 15 mins of the second half, to push the deficit back out to 7 points – a lead they never relinquished.
Although beaten on a final score line of 2-17 to 1-13, this was a very encouraging performance, not least because Ahane finished the game with 10 minors on the field of play.
The final game is scheduled for next Tuesday night, 5th March, in Rhebogue, against local rivals Monaleen, with a quarter final place up for grabs.
