Despite being clear underdogs at the outset, our u21 hurlers had an excellent 1-14 to 1-8 victory against Kilmallock in the Co. Quarter Final in Rhebogue. On a night that wasn’t for the feint hearted, it was the men in green and gold who set the early pace. A series of quick fire points from the impressive Cian Casey in midfield helped Ahane into an early 0-4 to 0-0 lead. Kilmallock couldn’t match Ahane’s work rate and tenacious tackling, and were reduced to 14 men just before the half time whistle, with Ahane leading by 0-10 to 0-6.
Kilmallock made early inroads into the Ahane lead with an opportunistic goal after 5 minutes of the second half, but Ahane continued to build on their early dominance, especially in midfield and defence, and pushed the lead out further with the game entering the final quarter. A coolly executed goal from the industrious Mark Donnellan with 8 minutes to go put daylight between the two teams and Ahane saw the game out to earn a 6 point victory.
This was a hugely positive performance with no shortage of the traditional Ahane values of determination, spirit and direct play. All roads lead to Martinstown this Wednesday evening where we take on East neighbours Doon in the county semi final at 19:30. All support is greatly appreciated!
