The senior hurlers pulled off a great win against Ballybrown on Friday last in Claughaun by 1-13 to 0-14 to get their first two points on the board before the break for inter-county action. Having gone down to Monaleen the previous week, the pressure was on the lads and we saw a determined group eventually prevail against a strong Ballybrown side. In a first half which saw scores hard to come by, Ballybrown edged ahead at the break with some well taken scores. Ahane remained strong in defence and battled hard, limiting the damage while playing against the elements.
The second half started cagey but Ahane began to get the upper hand up front with Tom Morrissey keeping the score board ticking over before young William Brennan scored a cracking goal to push us ahead. Having weaved past numerous defenders en route to goal and no catches left, Willie finished to the net from the 21m line with as sweet a strike off the hurley as you’re likely to see this year. A major influence on proceeding was the introduction of Niall Moran in the half forward line mid-way through the first half. Fresh from enforced absence recently due to another busy few months of calving season on the farm, Niall was all over the field and added a couple of vital scores in this low scoring game. With some great performances throughout the side, Ahane saw out nervous last few minutes, remaining two points to the good upon the final whistle.
This was a seriously hard fought win and super to come out the right side of it going into the summer break. Well done lads.
