Ahane Camogie AGM Report

Ahane Camogie held their AGM on Wednesday evening via Zoom due to the current COVID-19 restrictions. There were good numbers in attendance which was great to see!

2020 was a year like never before and at stages we thought we would not get back out on the pitches to train and play again in 2020, but we did in July! Huge credit to all our mentors, COVID-19 Supervisors, players, parents, volunteers and hard working committee members who put in such fantastic work and effort to ensure that we could get back playing and training safely!

We had another great year at U8, U10 and U12 with fantastic numbers at all ages meaning we could field two teams at each age. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 these girls did not get to play as many games as usual and their blitz’s could not go ahead but huge credit to their mentors who managed to organise games for the girls with teams locally.

Our U14’s got back out on the field in July and enjoyed being back training, they managed to play their championship which saw them put in some fantastic performances. They reached the semi final of the Co Championship but they came up against a strong Croagh team and unfortunately they came out on the losing end of the semi final. Huge thank you to their mentors and parents for everything this year.

At U16 we were entered in the A Championship and played two very close opening round games but were unlucky to come out on the wrong end of both results. We qualified for the U16 plate final which was a very close encounter with Killeedy but our girls battled hard and won the final by the tightest of margins! It was fantastic for the club especially this year to bring home some silverware to the club. It was a great year for the dual players at this age grade too as the Ladies Football Team won the U16 A Championship this year for the first time in the clubs history which was a fantastic achievement!

Our Minors also had success in the Minor 12 a-side competition which saw them bring home some more silverware as they beat Murroe Boher in the final. Thank you to their mentors, their parents and the players themselves for their commitment, and support all year.

Our Seniors commenced their championship campaign in August where they travelled to Crecora to play Crecora on a roasting hot morning, they beat Crecora and then after a long break they welcomed Newcastle West to Mackey Park in September. A serious battle as always between the two teams that saw the game end in a Newcastle West win by 2 points. They then travelled to Killeedy for the Co Semi Final four days later, but unfortunately this proved a hurdle too far and the girls lost out to a strong Killeedy team that went on to win the Co Championship. We want to saw a massive thank you to the girls who were incredibly dedicated throughout the year and adapted so well to all the changes and upheaval. Huge thank you to Jonathan Hayes, Michael McNamara, Sarah Crotty, and Emer Kenny who were our Senior Management for the year, alongside Toni Macken who did first aid, Tony Kenny who was the teams Covid Supervisor, and Mark D’Arcy who was the teams kitman. We want to wish Jonathan Hayes the very best of luck with all he does in the future as he has decided to step away for the 2021 season. Jonathan was a fantastic mentor and coach throughout his four years involved with the Senior and Minor team and we thank him for everything he did.

2020 did have a number of other positives for our club; we ran the MNA Programme which is an initiative by the Camogie Association to get more mothers involved in coaching their daughters. Our MNA mentor Lorraine Collins recruited 19 mothers who took part in the training. Huge thank you to Lorraine who put in huge work to get the programme up and running and created such an enjoyable four weeks of training for all involved!

We also became a 20x20 Charter Club and we appointed two 20x20 Club Ambassadors. We chose Judith and Niamh Mulcahy as our 20x20 Club Ambassadors as they are such fanatic role models for all the girls in our club and they help out with training our underage teams. Both Niamh and Judith have done so much for girls in sport and for the club and we are forever proud of them.

Towards the end of last year our PRO Emer Kenny won a Federation of Irish Sport Volunteer of the Year Award for her work as PRO for the Camogie club and the GAA club, her role as a coach with our U10’s and U11’s, and her work with the senior team. We are incredibly proud of Emer and her achievements!

Massive well done and congratulations to all the girls from U14 up to Senior who have represented the club on Inter County teams in 2020. We are incredibly proud of you for representing us so well at the highest level and it is a wonderful achievement for you and your families.

Finally, huge thank you to all the parents, players, mentors, COVID-19 supervisors, volunteers, our hard working committee and our supporters for everything they have done this year to ensure that we got back on the pitch safely and that everyone remained safe and healthy throughout the season. Huge thank you as always to Colm Barry and the GAA Club for their continued support and ensuring that the pitches, ball wall and all the facilities in Mackey Park are at the highest level and are available for all our teams we greatly appreciate it!

Heres to the 2021 season!
