Saturday evening saw Ahane welcome Newcastle West to Mackey Park to play the fourth round of the Adult Summer League. Ahane were down several of their panel for the game, but they put in huge effort, work rate and showed great heart that was not reflected in the end score.

Abby Murrihy made her starting senior debut at corner back and had a serious game, she played as if this was her tenth season in senior camogie, and not her first time starting. Alongside her Ella Ryan and Sinead O’Curry had super games in the full back line and they tried their very best to keep Newcastle West at bay. As always Aine Reynolds had a good day with the frees and scored five points from frees. Newcastle West were by far the stronger but Ahane made life difficult for them right through the game. Again, the Ahane half back line of Aisling Herbert, Ann Kennedy and Aoife Quinn were strong throughout and won some great ball both in the air and on the ground. Molly Hussey in mid field covered every blade of grass in Mackey Park, made some great support runs, and laid off some fantastic ball into Aine Reynolds, Sarah Cosgrove, Anna Nagle, Ciara Macken and Margaret Meskell who all had great games. Again, the work rate for all the players was to be commended. Newcastle West took some beautiful scores and ran away with a strong lead in the first half that they continued to build on for the second half. Audrey made some great saves in goals and denied the Newcastle forwards on several occasions. Ahane had goal chances of their own, but they just couldn’t manage to get them to stick in the back of the net. Credit to the Newcastle West goalkeeper who denied us in the second half and put the ball out for a 45’ which Aine stepped over and slotted over. Unfortunately, despite the trojan work put in by our girls Newcastle West won by a large margin. Full time score Ahane 0-06 Newcastle West 6-18
