Ahane welcomed Doon to Mackey Park on Tuesday to play the Semi Final of the Brian Butler Cup. Both sides traded scores in the opening minutes before Doon started to get on top. Ahane scored first with Kevin Morrissey scoring great point, but Doon went on to score 1-03 with no response. However, points from Mark Donnellan, Liam O’Mara and Johnny Meskell kept the Ahane score ticking over. First water break and the scores were Ahane 0-6 Doon 1-04. Again, the second quarter saw Doon start the quicker as Ahane found it hard to make the ball stick in their forward line. Johnny Meskell, Davy Laing and Peter Donohoe got scores for Ahane, but Doon managed to get their second goal after a side-line ball in led to a scramble on the line which saw the ball go over the line and into the net. The half time score stood as Ahane 0-11 Doon 2-08. The second half got underway and again it was Doon that started the quickest, but serious credit is due to our lads who never gave up and got some fantastic scores to chip away at Doon’s lead. Doon got their third goal but points again from Kevin and Peter kept the Ahane charge moving. Second water break score stood as Ahane 0-14 Doon 3-14. Ahane’s goal came from a penalty which Johnny Meskell buried after Kevin Morrissey was pulled down inside the 21. Ahane’s second goal came from Killian Enright after a great ball in from Mark Donnellan. The two goals along with points from Kevin Morrissey meant we were down to a one-point game much to the excitement of the Ahane crowd, however it was too little two late as we couldn’t manage to level it and then go ahead. Full time Ahane 2-18 Doon 3-16. Huge credit to our lads who left it all on the field.
