Round one of the Junior 12 a-side county championship saw Ahane take on Crecora in Crecora on Saturday afternoon. Ahane started the stronger, but Crecora took the lead after the first water break. Ahane got the first goal of the game as Margaret Meskell pulled on a loose ball in the square and it hit the back of the Crecora net. Anna Nagle got a point for Ahane and Crecora got two points as the scores stood at the first water break as Ahane 1-01 Crecora 0-02. Anna Nagle got her second point in the 16th minute, but Crecora moved the ball well through the lines and got their first goal of five. Not a minute later Crecora got their second goal. Ahane defended well and were under a serious amount of pressure at various stages in the game. Some great fielding of the ball was on display from both sides along with some great hooking and blocking. Crecora’s third goal came from a dropping long range free that just went under the bar on the far corner and into the net. Half time score Ahane 1-02 Crecora 4-03. The second half was other good 30 minutes of camogie with Ciara Oliver getting a lovely point for Ahane in the opening 30 seconds of the half. Crecora got their fifth goal two minutes into the half, but Ahane never gave up battling and fighting. Second half water break Ahane 1-03 Crecora 5-05. Anna got her third point of the game after the second water break. And Ahane had a goal chance saved and were unlucky that a number of their shots for points went just wide in the final quarter. They battled and fought hard throughout the game, and showed some great skill and team work throughout. It was a great game of camogie played by two very hard working, skilful teams.
