The LIT Gaelic Grounds played host to Ahane v Doon in the 3rd round of the Bons Secours Senior Hurling Championship on Sunday. Ahane started the stronger and took advantage of playing with the wind. Points from Ronan Fox, Ciarán Barry and Niall Moran gave Ahane a two-point cushion before Doon got a free and put it over the bar. Mark Donnellan was the next Ahane player to score and then in the seventh minute Tom scored a beauty of a goal after a great series of passes between himself, Mark Donnellan and Dan Minehan. Tom then added a point to his tally and Ahane were six points up. Doon did get two more points one from play and one from a free before the water break. Score after 15 minutes was Ahane 1-05 Doon 0-04. Niall Moran got in on the scoring action as he put two points on the bounce over the bar, Mark Donnellan added a point as did Ronan before Doon got two points from frees to close the gap back to six. Ciarán Barry started with the ball in the half back line, continued his run, and got on the end of the move to put the ball over the bar and put Ahane seven points to the good. Half time Ahane 1-10 Doon 0-06. Doon started the second half brighter and got two points before Dan Minehan got a point from play for Ahane. However, Doon started to hit their purple patch and scored three points with no response. Tom got a point from a free, but Doon went on to score a goal after the ball deflected into the goal of a hurley. Tom kept Ahane two points up as he scored an outrageous point from the tightest of angles out near the side-line. Second half water break Ahane 1-13 Doon 1-11. Unfortunately the final quarter was dominated by Doon. They scored four points which saw them go ahead by two points before Tom dummy sidestepped the Doon defender and popped the ball over and we were back to a one point game. But Doon kept the pressure one and got points to push their lead to three. Again Morrissey brought it to two but the killer blow came when Pat Ryan struck for goal and buried it. Ahane got one final point from a Tom Morrissey free but Doon ran out winners on a full time score of Ahane 1-16 Doon 2-18.
